The only way to maintain that healthy, warm-weather glow is to hit the tanning salon or invest in expensive, high-end bronzers, right? Wrong. Just head to the kitchen pantry! Here’s a thrifty, cruelty-free beauty recipe that calls for only two ingredients and a container to store it in.
DIY Bronzer
- Cocoa or cinnamon powder
- Powdered sugar or baby powder
- An old mineral makeup sifter jar or an old compact
Mix the ingredients together until you’ve reached your desired shade for bronzing. Add more cocoa or cinnamon powder to darken, or add more sugar or baby powder to lighten. If you’re naturally fair-skinned like me, I suggest adding the cocoa or cinnamon powder sparingly, a little at a time. Pour the mixture into the sifter jar or compact, apply using a blush brush, and voilà—you have the look of sun-kissed skin!
Now you can easily maintain your summery, bronzed glow throughout the fall and winter. Bring on sweater weather, bonfires, and apple cider!

Although contouring & highlighting is a daunting process, it’s one of the most powerful tools - pairing them nicely can totally transform your face by playing up your features and downplaying your flaws. Before you actually do these, it is necessary that you know your face shape. Once you know this, you can contour and highlight your face to balance your face shape.
“To contour is to use a darker color to push back areas that are naturally receding and to highlight is to use a lighter color to bring forward areas that are naturally prominent”
What you will need:
1. Contour: color that is one to two shades darker than your foundation eg. brown eyeshadow, bronzer or a darker foundation.
2. Highlight: color that is one to two shades lighter than your foundation eg. a shimmery white/beige eyeshadow or a lighter foundation.
3. Tools: Brush, sponge, fingers - whichever you find easier.
Simply follow the picture taken from Kevyn Aucoin as below on where to contour & highlight:
Where to Contour:
1. Under your cheekbones - to sharpen round face2. Along the sides of your nose - to slim a wide nose3. Under the tip of your nose - to make nose to appear shorter4. Jawline - to disguise double chin5. Creases of your eyes - to create a deep-set eyes 6. Temples - make a wide or very round forehead appear narrower
Where to Highlight:
1. Front of the forehead2. Browbone & Inner corner of your eyes - it will add brightness to your eyes3. Right above your cheeks - creates the illusion of higher cheekbones and gives a nice glow4. Along the bridge of nose - creates the illusion of sharper nose5. Cupid’s bow (lips) - very flattering and really emphasizes the lips
Tips & Tricks:
1. Remember to blend in the color very thoroughly so there are no harsh lines.2. Aim for something that blends into the skin but gives off a nice healthy sheen. Highlights should not be obvious, but they should enhance.3. If you use cream to contour, make sure to apply after your foundation and before your setting powder.4. Start out a little at a time – it is always easier to add more color. 5. Remember that practice makes perfect!
